Anne Churchwell Stokes never knew
her mother. Adopted as an infant she became the heir to a chain of
small department stores in Georgia and Florida. Learning the
business at her father’s side, she travelled with him to New York,
Paris, and Cuba! She also learned a keen sense of civic obligation
in a town plagued by poverty, my home town of Albany, GA. The mom
to two gay sons speaks directly to evolving views of LGBTQ people
in the deep south.
